Is Reforestation the Best Way to Fight Climate Change? This Study Says Yes

Is Reforestation the Best Way to Fight Climate Change? This Study Says Yes

Electric vehicles. Carbon-capture devices. Replacing cattle with bison. Lots of ideas have been tossed around for addressing climate change, but a new study suggests that one of the most effective solutions is pretty simple: Just plant more trees—a trillion of them to be exact.

The research, conducted by the Swiss university ETH Zurich, found that around 0.9 billion hectares (roughly 2.2 billion acres) of land is suitable for reforestation around the globe. If it were populated with trees, they could capture about 205 billion metric tons of carbon: That’s two-thirds of all the human-generated carbon emissions released since the Industrial Revolution.

“We all knew that restoring forests could play a part in tackling climate change, but we didn’t really know how big the impact would be,” professor and study co-author Thomas Crowther said in … Read the rest

Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Levels Have Reached a New All-Time High

Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Levels Have Reached a New All-Time High

The bad news regarding the state of our planet and climate keeps piling up. Yesterday, a report predicted climate change could have disastrous effects for the planet by 2050. Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, better known as NOAA, published data showing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are continuing to skyrocket.

CO2 levels recorded at NOAA’s Mauna Loa Atmospheric Baseline Observatory reached a new record high in May, peaking at 414.7 parts per million (ppm). That’s the highest seasonal peak recorded in 61 years of measurements at the mountaintop observatory.

This marks the “seventh consecutive year of steep global increases” in CO2 levels in the atmosphere, according to the press release. But the amount of carbon dioxide has been on the upswing ever since the observatory first started measuring. In the early 1960s, … Read the rest

A New Report Finds a ‘High Likelihood’ of Climate Disaster Ending Human Civilization by 2050

A New Report Finds a ‘High Likelihood’ of Climate Disaster Ending Human Civilization by 2050

News about climate change continues to get worse—and a new report is even more troubling, both for the dire predictions it contains and its critique of past reports, which it claims have often been watered-down. The latest analysis is published by the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration, an Australia-based think tank, Vice reports. The researchers conclude that “climate change now represents a near- to mid-term existential threat to human civilization” and criticizes existing climate reports for being too conservative in gauging the effects of carbon emissions. The risks of climate change, the researchers assert, are much bigger, and much more imminent, than most policymakers will admit.

“Human life on earth may be on the way to extinction, in the most horrible way,” wrote retired Australian Navy Admiral Chris Barrie in the report’s foreword.

The report … Read the rest
