Is the Paleo Diet All It's Cracked Up to Be? Here's What a New Study Says

Paleo diets are sold on two golden promises: low-carb eating and better gut health. But a new study from Australian researchers suggests that the two might not go hand in hand—cutting out the carbs might not work as advertised. Published in the European Journal of Nutrition, this study indicates that paleo participants have an abnormally high amount of Trimethylamine-N-oxide (that’s TMAO for short) in the gut, which could raise your risk of heart disease.

This new food fad, the paleolithic, paleo, or “caveman” diet, calls strictly for grass-fed meat, eggs, fish, nuts, berries, fruits, veggies, and natural sweeteners. Imagine what our early ancestors would have eaten hundreds of thousands of years ago, then remove the mammoth drives from the equation. The idea is to cut out artificial and factory-farmed foods and emphasize simple, effective nutrition.

How Broccoli Soup Helped Men Beat Early-Stage Prostate Cancer

If nobody’s forced vegetables on you since you were a kid, consider this an order. British researchers found that cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, and cauliflower, may quash a gene in prostate tissue related to prostate cancer.

In the study, men with early-stage prostate cancer ate broccoli soup for a year. Those who had a soup with a boost of glucoraphanin—a phytonutrient in certain vegetables—saw total suppression of the gene that causes cancer cells to infect healthy tissue.

Make it a point to eat a lot of cruciferous produce. And don’t shy away from frozen vegetables. They’re usually picked when at peak ripeness, which is also when glucoraphanin levels are highest.

Brooklyn Lager Inducted Into the Men’s Journal Craft Beer Hall of Fame

We sat down with Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery, to get the lowdown on Brooklyn Lager, the first beer to be inducted into the Men’s Journal Craft Beer Hall of Fame.

“I think today Brooklyn Lager is in 36 or 37 countries,” Oliver told Men’s Journal. “I’ve had it everywhere from Shanghai to Australia. What was a strange little beer 25 or 30 years ago, has grown into the everyday beer for people all over the world.”

Oliver first joined Brooklyn Brewery in 1994.

“At that time, I think Brooklyn Lager had started to lose its way, flavor-wise, so I just kind of tightened things up,” Oliver said. “When Brooklyn Lager was introduced, beer was this kind of yellow, fizzy liquid. That was the stuff people knew as beer.”
