Here’s What You Need to Know About Bally’s Cleanup Initiative on Everest

The recent climbing season at Mount Everest has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, with dangerously long lines, overcrowding, and trash dominating the conversation. The peak is one of the seven natural wonders of the world—and with it in such dire conditions, the Swiss brand Bally decided to step in. They launched the “Peak Outlook” initiative to help revitalize Everest, in addition to keeping other environments safe and clean for the future.

In Spring 2019, Bally sponsored a clean-up mission on Mount Everest. The company didn’t just stick to the usual areas where cleanups occur either. Instead of just focusing on the area between base camp and Camp II at 6,400 meters, Bally also collected waste from the so-called “Death Zone” on Everest that’s over 8,000 meters up.

Mandy Moore Completes Another Big Climb, This Time to Mount Everest Base Camp

May has been a busy month on Mount Everest, with an unprecedented number of climbers making their way up the mountain. The world’s highest peak even received a visit from This Is Us star Mandy Moore, who hiked to Everest base camp over the weekend, CNN reports. She made the journey with a group of friends as part of Eddie Bauer’s #WHYIHIKE campaign. “There is so much magic in these mountains.” Moore wrote on Instagram after reaching base camp. “They represent adventure in the grandest form and in a language all their own.”

This isn’t her first time tackling a high-altitude climb. Last fall, she summited Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. To do it, she … Read the rest

Long Lines and Overcrowding Are Creating a Deadly Climbing Season on Mount Everest

Overflowing trash, long lines, and hours-long delays—that’s what Mount Everest is looking like these days, and the consequences have been serious. This season’s death toll has climbed to 11, making it one of the deadliest on record, CNN reports. The world’s highest peak confronts climbers with all kinds of dangers, from brutal weather to a lack of oxygen, but unprecedented crowds on the mountain are making the already unforgiving peak even more dangerous.

According to The New York Times, Everest has become nearly overrun with climbers from across the globe attempting to reach the summit. Facing short weather windows (May is generally the best time to climb), mountaineers have clogged the routes up the mountain. Even the summit itself has become dangerously overcrowded, leading to lines and delays that last for hours. Veteran climber Nirmal Read the rest

Kami Rita Sherpa Makes Record-Breaking 23rd Mount Everest Ascent

Climbing to the summit of Mount Everest is an accomplishment nearly any adventurer would be pleased with. How about doing it 23 times? That’s how Sherpa climber Kami Rita feels after his latest summit of the 29,035-foot peak, which set a new all-time record and broke his previous milestone of 22 climbs, according to CBS News.

Rita previously set the record of 22 climbs in 2018, and on Wednesday he reached the summit of the mountain to break his own record, said Gyanendra Shrestha, a Nepalese government official that was at the mountain’s base camp.

“It is my profession, but at the same time I am setting new world record for Nepal too,” Rita said to the The Associated Press last month.
