How Brad Pitt Got Fight-Ready For ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’

How Brad Pitt Got Fight-Ready For ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’

Brad Pitt is no stranger to getting into fighting shape for a role. Nearly 20 years ago, he set the shirtless standard in Hollywood playing underground boxer Tyler Durden in Fight Club. Since then, his athletic physique has made several more noteworthy appearances, like when he played Greek warrior god Achilles in Troy or tank commander Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier in Fury. The feedback from Pitt’s trainers over the years has been consistent: It’s not all looks with Pitt; he also possesses impressive athletic prowess and trains consistently, even when not filming.

So when Pitt was cast as the ex-military stuntman Cliff Boot in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, the base physicality was already there. The script had a number of epic fights for Boot, including one with Bruce Lee—and it was decided early on that those sequences wouldn’t involve stunt doubles. That meant … Read the rest

Idris Elba on Fighting The Rock in ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ and the Best Advice He’s Ever Received

Is there anything Idris Elba can’t do? Whether it’s acting, directing, writing, creating his own TV series, training to become a professional kickboxer (he won his only pro fight on a Round 1 TKO), designing his own fashion line, or working as a pro DJ, Elba’s done a little bit of everything through his Hollywood career.

Now, on his next project, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Elba will take on the role of a villain—but not just any run-of-the-mill bad guy. This time, Elba will be playing Brixton Lore, a “super-powered”, genetically-enhanced, rogue MI6 agent turned mercenary, or as he calls himself in the trailer, “black Superman.” In the film, Elba has to face off against two of the most well-known action stars in the world: Dwayne Read the rest

‘Top Gun 2’: Here’s Your First Look at Tom Cruise in the Action-Packed ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Trailer

Tom Cruise is ready to fly—again. The first Top Gun: Maverick trailer has been released, putting the audience into the sky right alongside Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

The movie was originally set for a 2019 release, but was pushed back to 2020 so director Joseph Kosinski could work on getting the most high-tech equipment he could shoot fighter jets in action. From the first trailer, it looks like he’s succeeded. Tom Cruise surprised the Hall H crowd at Comic-Con in San Diego with the trailer for the film. The movie is being put together by Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer, bringing Top Gun to a new generation of fans.

The new trailer shows off Maverick in action in the skies along with the supporting cast of Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Jennifer … Read the rest

Exploring the Greenland Ice Sheet With Pro Climber Will Gadd

Ice climber Will Gadd is no stranger to taking on dangerous terrain. Over his career, Gadd has explored remote areas in the Colorado Rockies, the shores of Ireland, Kilimanjaro, Canada’s highest waterfall, Utah’s Snow Canyon, and Niagara Falls, becoming the first person to climb the ice-covered rock wall there. But his most recent adventure might be his most thrilling yet.

For his new Red Bull TV film Beneath the Ice, Gadd traveled to the Greenland ice sheet to explore the deep caverns and holes in the ice cap, descending hundreds of feet in dangerous conditions to learn more about spots that basically no one in the world has ever explored. Working with professor and glaciologist Jason Gulley, Gadd hoped to find out how meltwater flows within glaciers and impacts the climate, including sea level rise.

Seal of Approval: Kumail Nanjiani on Conan’s Inspiring Podcast, Classic Films, and His New Kicks

Seal of Approval: Kumail Nanjiani on Conan’s Inspiring Podcast, Classic Films, and His New Kicks

Kumail Nanjiani, the star of the new movie Stuber, discusses a comedy podcast, a pair of purple kicks, a not-boring classic film, and his other recent obsessions.

Film

A cinematographer suggested I watch The Conformist, about a Mussolini operative out to assassinate a professor. I’m not as well-versed in the visual elements of moviemaking as I am in the writing, and the film was an education. It was stunning and not at all boring, like some classics.

Podcast

I’ve been listening to Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. On it, Conan goes deeper with guests than he does on TV, and you see a different side of him—like how he’s more insecure than you might imagine, which I find inspiring to hear. The Lisa Kudrow episode was especially good.

Ewan McGregor stars alongside Bruce Greenwood and Rebecca Ferguson, while The Haunting of Hill House director Mike Flanagan is behind the camera for this spooky thriller.

Taking place decades after the events of The Shining, an adult Danny Torrance (McGregor) is still haunted by the events at the Overlook Hotel—and still dealing with his psychic abilities, a.k.a what he calls “the shining.” This time around, Danny meets a young girl who has similar abilities to him, and also encounters a cult-like group who hunt down people with these special powers to “feed” on those abilities themselves.

The trailer has numerous nods to the original film, and as Flanagan said … Read the rest

‘Fast & Furious 9’: John Cena's In, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Out?

The Fast & Furious franchise is about to get another major injection of muscle: John Cena is officially in the cast of Fast & Furious 9, joining Vin Diesel and company for their next mission, according to Deadline. Universal officially confirmed to the outlet that Cena will be in the cast, which comes months after Diesel teased his addition on Instagram.

That also means Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is out. Deadline reports that Johnson “will not be in Fast & Furious 9.” Johnson’s absence doesn’t mean he’s done with the series, though. Johnson is starring in the first-ever Fast series spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw, this summer with Jason Statham, and that will likely become a franchise itself if it performs well at the box office.

The addition of Cena will … Read the rest

Kyle Chandler on His Favorite Monster Movies and Why ‘Godzilla’ Endures

Kyle Chandler is taking on the biggest monster of them all in his new film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Coming into the film, Chandler already had some experience battling a big creature after appearing in Peter Jackson’s 2005 version of King Kong, and now he’ll get to face off against Godzilla.

For his June cover story, Chandler took a road trip from Texas to California, and during that time, he sat down with us to speak about his favorite monster films and why Godzilla continues to be one of the most legendary characters in film.

For Chandler’s favorite monster movie, he went old school. While he couldn’t remember the exact name of his favorite movie, Chandler certainly remembers how it felt to watch it as a seven-year-old. “It was at a next-door neighbors house on a reel-to-reel,” Chandler … Read the rest
